How “big” are different Diamond shapes at each Carat Weight?
The chart below has the approximate dimensions for each of the most popular Diamond shapes at 1, 2 and 3 carats. These measurements are approximate and every Diamond has its own dimensions, but these are the average sizes for a well-cut stone.

So, what Diamond shapes are biggest?
When we say biggest, we mean largest surface area. Let’s compare a 1 carat Round, Oval and Princess-Cut. This is a great example for to compare the 3 most popular categories- Rounds, elongated, and squares.
- 1 carat Round’s surface area: 33.18 mm. Formula: A = π*(radius)²
- 1 carat Oval’s surface area: 34.53 mm. Formula: A = π*(smaller axis)*(larger axis)
- 1 carat Princess-Cut’s surface area: 30.25 mm. Formula: A = side*side

So, a 1 carat Oval looks 4% larger than a 1 carat and 14% larger than a 1 carat Princess-Cut. Keep this in mind if shopping for a non-elongated shape of Diamond! You may need to go a little larger on Carat Weight to get the same look you were expecting and consider a Lab-Grown Diamond to get the biggest Diamond for your buck.
