How to buy an Oval Diamond

When buying an Oval Diamond, be on the lookout for Proportions, a minimal “bowtie” effect, and a pleasing Length to width ratio.

  • An Oval’s Table % should be between 56 – 62% and its depth should be between 63 – 68% for maximum light return, according to the IGI.
  • These Proportions should also lead to a Diamond that reflects a generous amount of light across the middle with a minimal amount of “bowtie” effect, which is a black shadow across the middle of the stone, due to a “dead space” where no light is being reflected.

  • Bowties are easy to pick up on with your eyes, and also under ASET Scope. An Oval showing blue as the primary color across its middle will have a noticeable bowtie (blue indicates contrast). An Oval that’s primarily red across the middle under ASET will not have a large bowtie, and should reflect a nice amount of light.
  • And lastly, aim for a Length/Width Ratio between 1.35 and 1.50. 1.40 seems to be the sweet spot where the Diamond looks nice and tall, but not too slender.
