Picking a perfectly-cut Radiant Diamond

A beautiful Radiant-cut Engagement Ring needs a center Diamond with perfect Cut quality, for maximum sparkle. But, how do we analyze Cut quality for fancy-shape Diamonds that don’t receive a Cut Grade on their report? We use Proportions, ASET Scope, and our eyes!

Here are the criteria for an “Excellent” Cut Radiant Diamond, as defined by the IGI. When a Radiant hits all (or the vast majority) of these criteria, it’s going to reflect the maximum possible amount of light. When it doesn’t, it’ll look a little bit flatter and won’t sparkle as much.

Next up, what Color should your Radiant-cut Diamond be?

Check out this chart for the optimal Color Grades for your Radiant-cut Diamond. For a Lab-Grown IGI Graded Diamond, 3.50 carats or below, I’m a big fan of “F” Color. It’s crisp white, and saves you several hundred off an “E” or “D” Color. Check out a couple “F” Color Radiants below:

How about Clarity Grade?

Check out this chart for a Radiant Diamond’s Clarity Grade. Remember that for Clarity, we want the lowest grade that’s “eye clean” aka no imperfections are visible to the naked eye. Since Lab Diamonds will usually be well within budget, I’m a fan of “VS1” Clarity for stones 4.00 carats and under. Above 4 carats, move into the “VVS” Range, and remember to always analyze Clarity in person, or have your jeweler do so for you if they’re not local (make sure they have a good return policy in case it’s a borderline “eye clean” stone!).

And how big should my Radiant-cut Engagement Ring be?

This is always a matter of personal preference and budget. 3 carats seems to be the happy place for a Radiant-cut Lab-Grown Diamond. But he’s a 1.50 carat and a 4.18 carat for comparison. Nothing wrong with going smaller or larger, all these stones make for beautiful Rings.

And what Setting should my Radiant-cut Diamond be in?

adiants make gorgeous Center Diamonds, and especially when rectangular in shape, don’t need much (if any) other diamonds on the Setting, assuming your Radiant’s well-cut. In my humble opinion, Radiant-cut Engagement Rings look beautiful as Solitaires, with an accented band, or with a hidden halo, just like the examples earlier in this post.
