How many carats should an Engagement Ring be?

How many carats should an Engagement Ring’s Center Diamond be? That’s an excellent question. While there’s not a single “right” answer, the average Engagement Ring Center Diamond size is roughly 1.10 carats in the USA, for a Natural Diamond Ring. That jumps to 2.50 carats for a Lab-Grown Center Diamond. Remember, these numbers don’t really matter. Stick to your budget and we’ll help you maximize your dollars on the biggest and brightest Diamond possible.

What does an “average” carat Natural Diamond cost?

I would recommend starting your search with this link to the best Diamonds on our site. These are pre-optimized for maximum sparkle, bright Color and eye-clean Clarity.

Roughly 1 carat Natural Diamonds, the "average" size for an Engagement Ring

Here I clicked this link for Natural Round Diamonds from 1 – 2 carats. This is on 8-1-2023, and I’ll absolutely forget to update this in a couple months, but right now you can get an “average” GIA Natural Round Diamond with ideal Proportions and “Excellent” Cut Grade for under $3,000. Click “Modify Search” on the top of that page if you want to add a budget range and opt for a larger or smaller Diamond.

This is just for Rounds, prices fluctuate a little bit from shape-to-shape, depending on popularity, supply, and the shape’s facet pattern (brilliant-cut versus step-cut). Check out the comparison below, you’ll see that Pear-shapes are a little more expensive than Emerald-Cuts around 1 carat.

How much does an “average” Lab-Grown Diamond cost?

Roughly 2.50 carat Lab-Grown Diamonds, the "average" size for an Engagement Ring

Here, I’m using this link and sorting “Carat Weight” from “Largest to Smallest”, and then scrolling around the 2.50 carats range. Lab Diamond prices fluctuate a lot more than Naturals, but on 8-1-2023 you can scoop a ~2.50 carat IGI Round-Brilliant Lab Diamond with “Ideal” Cut for around $1,000 – $1,200. These prices won’t fluctuate too much from shape-to-shape, as they do with Naturals.

Glad you asked 🙂 Here’s a Natural and a Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Ring with a Center Diamond around the average carat weights listed above.
