The bowtie effect is something you might be worried about when shopping for Oval Diamonds. In this post we’re going to learn what a “bowtie” is and how to pick out a beautifully-cut Oval Diamond without one- Proportions really do make a difference!
What’s the Bowtie Effect in an Oval Diamond?
The bowtie effect is a dark shadow cast across the middle of any elongated diamond shape. This isn’t exclusive to Ovals. Poorly-cut Marquise, Pears, Emerald-Cuts and (to a lesser degree) Radiants can show a bowtie as well.

How do I pick an Oval Diamond without a Bowtie?
First thing’s first- lock in your Proportions to our ideal ranges for an Oval Diamond. If Table % and Depth % are calibrated, maximum light gets reflected, and the risk of any non-reflecting areas in your Diamond is decreased. You can see our ideal Proportions for all diamond shapes here.
Second, ask for an image under an ASET Scope.
- Lots of blue across the middle = noticeable bowtie
- Lots of red across the middle = well-cut Diamond

Third thing to do is ask me for a live video and picture, or schedule a visit and see the Diamond in person (you can do this in any Diamond’s product page by filling out the appointment form).
